  A Big ThankYou to everyone who came out to support the kids.  It was great to see you all!

  Also another big thankyou to The Shire of East Pilbara for the projector and screen, Martu Media for the sound equipment, Mere at the Visitors Centre for staying back and attending our showing, all the participants over the 2 weeks I hope you learnt alot and enjoyed yourselves you kids are awesome, to Shakthi and Elias who are on a plane back to Sydney right now thank you for your enthusiasm and sharing your excellent knowledge I think that the Newman young people will definately make you redundant (maybe sooner than later!)

  Today we put our awesome ideas onto film.  We spent 6 hours out in the heat to bring you and awesome film which we will edit tomorrow and preview on Thursday.  You Better Be There! Meet at the visitors centre at 630 to see what we’ve done.  Wendy Stewart from Country Arts WA also joined us today, she is the Regional Youth Arts Development Officer.  Check out our hotseats below!

  Today we started to plan our short film that we are going to show on Thursday.  We had lots of great idea’s! Although it took quite a while to get it down on paper because everyone likes to talk at the same time. You’ll have to come on Thursday and see our final product, i’m not going to give it away.  Shakthi also had an interview with ABC Radio today and just after he hung up we had a gentleman from Roebourne phone and ask about filming and such. Radio advertsing really does work =)

  Newman Media Crew hit the Shopping Centre

  Today we started with a discussion about the day  “What are we going to do?”

  We decided to “go to the people.”

  We did some practise footage with holding the camera instead of using a tripod and then we strolled out.  We headed to the shopping centre where we asked people if we could ask them a few questions… we got a heap of no’s but we got about a dozen fearless people who said sure!

  By the time we returned we were all exhausted and we decided that we would have an early lunch.  After we filled our stomachs we got straight into editing our interviews.  Also Dave Wells from Martu Media stopped by to check out what we were up to. about half an hour after Dave left we were visited by Billy Atkins an elderly indigenous gentleman who let us ask him some questions and film them! It was excellent.  We also received a visit from the manager for Community Well-being Sharon Walsh.  It’s been a jampacked day but in the end we are extremely excited to see it all put together.

  We ended with our Daily Journal and all packed up and headed for home! Check out our entries below.

  Day three where to begin? We started with an ice breaker to meet our new participant Hollie.  We played Air Land Sea.  It’s not as easy as you think when it first gets explained!

  We then went onto viewing yesterday’s video’s and brainstormed what we wanted to create today.

  Izac came up with a great idea to shoot some interviews.  So that’s what we did.  We interviewed tourists who had just visited the mines.  We got some great footage and made our first interview movie.

  After the mine tour we were joined by Anthony, Jacob and Clayton who also had some great ideas.  Together with the rest of the team they created another two films.

  Today we started off by splitting into teams: Shakthi, Renae and Lee on Team 1 and Elias, Peta and newly joined Izac on Team 2.

  Team 1 Focused on

  • Website creation
  • Photo and Video uploading
  • Website planning
  • and HEAPS of signing up for FREE accounts!

  Team 2’s focus today was :

  • Editing of film from Day 1
  • Creation of 2 short videos thought up on the spot
  • Using Final Cut Pro to edit and manipulate video

  Our first day of workshops!

  First we made our space cool:

  • Our Random Notes Wall: putting up cut outs we liked from magazines
  • We discussed Newman: how Newman is represented in the media, issues about Newman, what we want to achieve through media
  • Shakthi and Elias showed us short films that kids from Roebourne and West Sydney had created
  • Renae Smith stopped by to see what we were up to and choose what she would like to learn about
  • Lee & Peta Bell took short shots with the video camera that will be edited tomorrow
  • We all did photo diaries at the end of the day and talked about what we learnt and what we did

  Shakthi Sivanathan and Elias Nohra from CuriousWorks crew left Sydney at 2am WA time! Landed 1:30pm in Newman where they met Lee Bell and drove into town.

  First Elias & Shakthi checked in to our accomodation at Seasons Hotel. They had a walk around the town centre.

  Then meetings were had with:

  • Mere from Newman Visitors Centre about the space and Internet
  • Charles from East Pilbara Shire about equipment and Internet
  • Dave from Martu Media about a possible partnership with the Martu people

  Everyone was zonked after a long day and retired in the early evening.
